A long time ago, Easter Island was covered with forests, villages and fields; it was a paradise. Its inhabitants built large statues to honor their ancestors. They carved them out of rock and moved them by rolling them over wood logs. It seems that they cut down so many trees that the forests vanished from their small island. Their civilization no longer exists, but the statues are still there. They remind us of the importance for a civilization's future to preserve its resources.
